17. Illinois by Sufjan Stevens, 2005
I’m not much for concept albums but this one is aces. Sufjan Stevens is a thoughtful songwriter, seeming to notice the small parts of a landscape or a crowd that most of us might miss. It’s this self awareness that gives his music such power. Chicago’s refrain of “all things go, all things go” always gives me a bit of a lump in the throat. Beautiful.
